We flew to Buenos Aires and then travelled on to Ushuaia to board a boat and sail towards Cape Horn. It was my first serious sea-crossing and I really have to say that the weather and strong currents in the complex southern seas makes learning to sail there a genuine acid test.
We arrived at Livingston Island on a 22-metre yacht and then there was a frenetic, very lonely crossing of the island on foot to reach the Spanish Antarctic base. I'll never forget this trip because of the challenges presented by the sailing, which brought us to the very limit on at least a couple of occasions, and above all the breathtaking Antarctic landscapes, a magic place that I'll always long to return to.
